Course Orientation
Welcome to the asynchronous study section (MG Online)
View the welcome message below from your facilitator.
PollDo you think MGSLG courses in general, and your course in particular, should be offered as either traditional face-to-face, online, or as both alternatives? Use the poll below to post your position.
Topic 1 - Blended vs Bichronous Online Training
As a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic MGSLG is experimenting with different delivery models. A return to offering only face-to-face workshops seems some way off. In fact it looks like MGSLG will need to offer different modes of study options in the future. Two options worth investigating is Blended Learning, a combination of face-to-face and online learning approaches, and bichronous online learning, that mixes synchronous (e.g. Zoom) and asynchronous (e.g. Moodle) online technologies. Let us investigate these two options below. While studying the resources below keep in mind what such an approach might mean for the reorganisation of the MGSLG course you manage.
Blended learning
Bichronous Online Learning
DiscussionSo, what approach, blended or bichronous, could offer some advantages for the future delivery of MGSLG courses, and your course in particular? Provide some thoughts (both pro and con) for the use of technology for course delivery. Use the forum below to discuss. Make sure you post at least once and reply to colleagues at least twice.
Topic 2 - Online Facilitation Techniques
Its erroneous to think that online study is a solitary pursuit, that students study in isolation. If organised correctly online study can create more connections for the learner than was possible with face-to-face learning. However, rich social interactivity does not just happen online. It needs to be set up by the course manager. The course facilitator needs to encourage dialogue and interaction. Some strategies below...
Synchronous (Zoom) facilitation techniquesGood techniques to consider when facilitating a Zoom or MS Teams meeting
Asynchronous (Moodle) facilitation techniquesHere are some good techniques to consider when facilitating asynchronous sessions on MG Online using Forums as a channel for discussions. For example, don't preempt the discussion by providing a definitive answer early in the discussion. Rather probe and question to allow the participants to shape the discussion.
Unlike a regular discussion, Moodle forum debates need to be summarized to ensure the students appreciate the what the facilitator considers the discussion's strongest contributions. This is usually done at the end of the discussion.
Social media messaging (WhatsApp) appsIn the first resource there are instructions to set up a social media channel such as a WhatsApp group to ensure quick and timely communication with class participants. Social media channels are faster and more immediate than using Moodle to communicate. The second resource goes deeper and provides a strategy to teach directly using the WhatsApp group. The third resources identifies communication tools available in the Moodle platform.

Topic 3 - Tracking, Statistics and Reporting
How do we know if learning is taking place when study is online? One of the concerns with adopting online learning is that teachers are unaware of how remote students are progressing. If, however, the course manager has set-up the online course properly there is plenty data to determine individual progress and set in place strategies to support students-at-risk. One of the benefits of using a Learning Management System, such as Moodle, is that it generates a lot of statistical data that can be used for reporting. As a course manager you need to be able to access this data and do the analysis.
What data do you need to pull from MG Online for your reporting? Use the forum below to list the type of data you would like to draw.
Topic 4 - Course Manager's Online Checklist
So what is your role as course manager? What do you need to do to ensure successful training? Below is a draft checklist that we will discuss and refine in the next synchronous meeting. Are you in agreement? How might it be improved?
Useful tool or not? From your perspective is the Course Manager's Check list a useful tool, or not. Have your say in the forum below. (Minimum response: Post once and reply twice.)
What did you learn from that hearing your colleagues opinions. Lets collect some data on what items you think should remain, which items removed and identify any additional duties not mentioned here. Use the questionnaire below to share your perspective.
